Interview with Spencer Haws, who developed Long Tail Pro

1. First of all thanks a lot for accepting my interview proposal. It’s a big moment for us.

No problem!  I appreciate the opportunity.

2. You don’t need an introduction but as a part of the formality, can you please tell our Readers a little about yourself?

First and foremost, I’m a father and husband to a wonderful woman.  In the business, world I’m known for having some success with niche sites and sharing my techniques on my blog at NichePursuits.com.  I’m also the creator of the keyword research tool, Long Tail Pro.

3. Why you entered in blogging-Any interesting story? Why you chose Niche blogging?

First, I started creating Niche Sites after a lot of trial and error.  It took me a couple of years before I understood how the search engines worked, but then I built lots of small niche sites as a way to rank quickly for lots of different keywords.  I started my blog after I found success as a way to share and connect with others.

4. I am a big fan of your Product “Long Tail Pro”. Why you decided to create it and how did you managed to create it?

I decided to create Long Tail Pro because I was unsatisfied with the other keyword research tools out there.  I wanted a tool that would allow you to do lots of keyword research very quickly and effectively.  I’m not a programmer, so I hired one to develop the product for me.

5. What were the obstacles you faced while working on Long Tail Pro?

The first major obstacle to creating Long Tail Pro was finding someone that both an excellent programmer and a good communicator.  My first attempt at finding a good programmer did not go well.  I spent alot of money and ended up with a programmer that was difficult to work with.  As a result, I let him go and found someone else.  This “new” programmer has now been with me for well over 2 years and is excellent!

6. I don’t know, whether you will like it or not but i am still asking this question- How one can make the best use of “Long Tail Pro”?

The answer really depends on if you are a blogger, business owner, niche website create, or what you are trying to get from Long Tail Pro.  I’ve created some basic videos on how to use the software here: http://www.longtailpro.com/demo-videos/

7. Which premium tools you are using on your blog and why?

Honestly, I’m not using too many premium tools.  I use an email management software, Infusionsoft, to collect emails.  Everything else, is pretty much free plugins that I use on my blog.

8. Many bloggers says-Alexa Rank and Google PR are just useless. What are your views about this?

I agree.

9. What one should do to keep the bounce rate of their blog or website under the mark of 50?

Make your content more engaging and interesting to your readers.

10.Tell us a little about your Offline Life.

I am currently training for my 4th marathon.  I enjoy sports of all kinds including racquetball, softball, running, and more.  I’m also a family man and enjoy spending time with my wife and kids hiking and camping when we can.

11.Is there any way to get good amount of traffic in small span of time?

Sure, paid traffic.

12.Is it beneficial to buy expired or dropped domains? If yes how? If not then why not?

Yes. Expired domains often have lots of “link juice”.  If you buy these domains, you can point links to your sites, sell links, or build a network for you or others to use.

13.How do you monetize your blog? What are your recommendations for new bloggers?

I monetize my blog primarily through selling my own products.  I make very little from affiliate sales (relatively speaking).  I build an email list and then create products that my audience would like (example – Long Tail Pro).

14.Now a day most of the new bloggers (specially from developing countries) starts blogging on common topics like Making money online, Blogging tutorials, Technology etc but very few of them achieve good results. According to you, which are the best topics for a new bloggers to start blogging?

Start blogging about what you are GOOD at.  Most people starting in the “make money” niche are terrible at making money…so its a bad idea to start a blog on that topic.  Pick something that you are knowledgeable and passionate about to start a blog on.  I didn’t start NichePursuits.com until I was making several thousand dollars a month from my niche sites…that’s why my blog became popular; because I was good at what I was talking about.

15.What are your future plans?

Online publishing outside of the internet marketing world and creating software products.

16.If you could give one tip to newbie bloggers, what would it be?

Be yourself and try to be different from others.  Don’t follow the crowd.
